London newcomers Torches weave disenchantment, misery and suspicion into blazing barrages of sound, pessimism and hostility rife in the two songs currently available online. Led by a sullen baritone on both, the tracks show different sides to the band, ‘Little Ice Age’ with its brooding lyrics, string waves and shimmering, atmospheric guitars slowly building layer upon layer before discreetly fading out. There’s nothing subtle about ‘Towerblock Confetti’ though, gunshot drum beats rattling beneath rousing howls, dripping in urgency and intensity.
